    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Quick and easy. All you need is a blender and 3 minutes to make this delicious smoothie.
    • Great for kids and adults. Kids love the tropical flavours, adults love the boozy version.
    • Simple ingredients. You only need a few freezer staples to make a delicious tropical smoothie.

What is a Bahama Mama Smoothie?

The Bahama Mama is a classic resort cocktail. It comes in many forms, but the most prominent flavours are typically pineapple, orange, grenadine, coconut, and rum. It can be stirred or blended. When I visited Mexico a few years ago, I discovered a variation called the Banana Mama, which incorporated a banana and some strawberry flavour. This recipe takes all of the classic flavours and turns it into a healthy fruit smoothie that can be boozed up when needed!

    Ingredients

Here is everything you'll need to make this tropical bahama mama smoothie:

ingredients to make a bahama mama smoothie
    • Frozen banana: Banana adds a wonderful creaminess to this smoothie. To freeze bananas, I like to peel them, cut into quarters, and freeze in a large plastic bag. With this method I add 4 banana quarters to this smoothie.
    • Frozen strawberries
    • Frozen pineapple
    • Orange juice
    • Coconut milk: I use the kind in the carton, but full-fat coconut milk from a can would work too and probably have a stronger flavour!
    • Grenadine: Adds a nice sweetness.

    Optional Ingredients

To turn this smoothie into a refreshing adult beverage, add your favourite alcohol. I find a mixture of 1 oz light rum and 1 oz coconut rum tastes lovely and tropical.

    • 1 oz light rum
    • 1 oz coconut rum

    Substitutions

There are many ways to change up this smoothie depending on your mood. Here are some substitution suggestions:

    • Banana. If you don't like banana in your smoothies, feel free to omit it and add about ½ cup ice. The smoothie will be less creamy and more icy, though.
    • Coconut milk. If you don't have coconut milk, any dairy-free milk will do. Coconut is a key flavour in the smoothie, though!
    • Grenadine. I like to add 1 tablespoon of grenadine for a nice sweetness. If you don't have it or can't find it, no problem. I get mine in the drink aisle of my grocery store.
    • Add booze. 1 oz light rum and 1 oz coconut rum is my pick for a delicious frozen cocktail!
    • Want a smoothie bowl? Reduce both the coconut milk and orange juice to ¼ cup each. Use the tamper of your blender to mix and stir until smooth. Add a small amount more liquid if needed. Blending will take several minutes.

    How to Serve

There are many ways to enjoy this tropical smoothie. Here are some suggestions:

    • Enjoy as a healthy breakfast or snack.
    • Booze it up by blending in 1 oz light rum and 1 oz coconut rum.
    • Serve with tropical apps such as my mango pico de gallo, gluten-free taquitos, or Mexican street corn salad.
    • Enjoy at brunch with some homemade gluten-free English muffins, bagels, or banana chocolate chip muffins.

    Make Ahead & Storage

Note that this smoothie recipe is best served and consumed fresh after preparing. It should not be made ahead of time, nor stored for later.

    For a Crowd

If you're hosting a crowd of people, this recipe is easy to scale up (depending on your blender capacity). Double the recipe for two large smoothies or 4 smaller smoothies, as pictured here. Use your judgement on the amount of booze, generally 1-2 oz per person.

    Expert Tips

Here are some of my top tips and tricks for a successful smoothie:

    • Use only frozen fruit. This will result in the coldest, thickest, creamiest smoothie.
    • Add the liquid slowly. You can always add more to thin it out.
    • Use a high powered blender. My Vitamix is my baby! I love it so much. This is the model I have and it creates the smoothest smoothies.
