    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Simple ingredients. Simple makes the best burger. You likely have most of the ingredients already. These burgers are gluten-free, egg-free, nut-free, and easily dairy-free.
    • Easily customizable. Use what you have on hand to make substitutions.
    • Great for kids and adults. Picky eaters will not even know what they're eating because it tastes so good!
    • Quick prep and quick cook. These burgers can come together on the table in 30 minutes.
    • Make ahead and freezing options. These burgers can also be prepped ahead of time to save you stress. The patties also freeze great for later.

    Ingredients

Here is everything you'll need to make these gluten-free burgers:

ingredients to make gluten free burgers.

Lean ground beef: This is my preferred meat. It's inexpensive, accessible, and produces deliciously juicy burgers.

Diced onion: Use any type of onion you have. Or 1 shallot.

Minced garlic: Fresh or pre-minced will work.

Milk: I use 2% milk, but if you are dairy-free, feel free to use your milk of choice.

Gluten-free worcestershire sauce: I use French’s Worcestershire Sauce. Omit if you can’t find.

Ketchup: Gives a slight sweetness and great flavour.

Gluten-free breadcrumbs: My favourite are Aurora gluten-free breadcrumbs.

Salt & pepper: A decent amount of salt is required in this recipe. Don't be scared, it gives these burgers amazing flavour. Reduce only slightly if you are watching your salt.

Your choice of burger toppings. See suggestions below.

burger toppings such as tomatoes, onion, pickles, buns, lettuce, etc.

    Burger Toppings

Customize your burger how you like! Go with the classics, or change it up for a unique flavour. Here are some suggestions:

    • Sliced tomatoes
    • Red onion
    • Ketchup
    • Mustard
    • Mayonnaise
    • Relish
    • Pickles
    • Green leaf or iceberg lettuce
    • Cheese
    • Caramelized onions
    • Hot banana peppers
    • or anything you enjoy on a toasted gluten-free bun!

Chef Tip: One of my all-time favourite combinations is inspired by a burger called The Hipster from an Ontario burger chain, The Works. It has havarti cheese melted on the patty, and is topped with caramelized onions and avocado slices. Try it out!

    Substitutions

There are many ways to change up these gluten-free burgers depending on your preferences. Here are some substitution suggestions:

    • Dairy-free. Use your favourite dairy-free milk in the patties.
    • No gluten-free worcestershire? I recommend either leaving it out, or adding an equal amount of gluten-free soy sauce, tamari, or coconut aminos for some saltiness.
    • Toppings. Use the above section to inspire your flavour combinations!

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Be sure to read the recipe card below for the full ingredient list and instructions for how to make these gluten-free burgers.

    (1) Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Use a spatula or your hands to mix until just combined.

    (2) Divide the burger meat into 5-6 oz balls (150-170g). These burgers are pretty large, so depending on the size you will yield about 10-12 burgers. Use a kitchen scale if you have one, or divide and eyeball it.

burger meat mixed in a glass bowl then weighed into 6 oz portions.

    (3) Form the balls into patties about 3 inches in diameter. They will be quite thick. Press your thumb into the centre of the patties to prevent swelling as they cook.

Place patties on a parchment lined baking sheet. If you are preparing them in advance, place the patties in the fridge until ready to cook. Or you can grill immediately.

    (4) Preheat your grill (or grill pan or cast iron skillet) to medium heat, about 400ºF.

    (5) Grill on one side for 3-5 minutes. The burgers will release when they are ready to be flipped.

    (6) Flip and cook for another 2-4 minutes until desired doneness.

Use a probe meat thermometer to check the internal temperature.

    130-140ºF: Medium Rare
    140-150ºF: Medium
    150-160ºF: Medium Well
    160-170ºF: Well Done

Allow burgers to rest on a plate for a few minutes. Serve on toasted gluten-free buns with your favourite toppings. Enjoy!

    How to Serve

There are so many ways to enjoy your gluten-free burgers. They are best served hot, fresh off the grill. Here are some suggestions:

    • Enjoy immediately on a toasted gluten-free bun, loaded with your favourite toppings.
    • Grill them up as the main dish for a gluten-free BBQ. Serve with side dishes below.
    • Cut up the patties and enjoy on a bed of lettuce with toppings as a burger salad.
    • Place between 2 pieces of lettuce for a lettuce-wrapped burger.
    • Add to your game day snack spread with some gluten-free mozzarella sticks and jalapeño poppers.

    Burger Side Dishes

Enjoy a thick, juicy burger with some of these delicious gluten-free sides:

    • Gluten-Free Onion Rings
    • Air Fryer Potato Wedges
    • Dairy-Free Broccoli Salad
    • Mexican Street Corn Salad
    • Mango Pineapple Quinoa Salad
    • Gluten-Free Pasta Salad
    • Gluten-Free Focaccia Bread
    • Gluten-Free Garlic Bread
    • Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus

    Make Ahead

Prepare the patties and place them on a baking sheet or in a container, cover, and store in the fridge up to 24 hours in advance.

    Storage & Freezing

Storage: Cooked burgers will keep in the fridge for 5 days. Reheat on the stove for a few minutes on each side, in the microwave in 20 second intervals, or in the air fryer for a few minutes until warmed through.

Freezing: Prepare the patties and flash freeze them on a baking sheet for 10 minutes. Then transfer patties to a freezer bag or container. Freeze for up to 2 months, then thaw overnight in the fridge before grilling.

    Expert Tips

Here are some of my top tips and tricks for successful gluten-free burgers:

    • Don't over mix the meat. Use your hands and mix just until all ingredients are combined. Over mixing can create a tough burger.
    • Use a kitchen scale for even burgers. 5-6 oz is a good size. You could also press the meat into a cookie cutter for an even look.
    • Keep an eye on the grill. The burgers cook quick, so use a probe meat thermometer to monitor your desired internal temperature.

    Frequently Asked Questions
