No need for the elbow grease of the potato masher—let your stand mixer do all the work and be rewarded with fluffy potatoes. Simply boil your potatoes, add them to your stand mixer with butter, milk, and spices, then mix for 1 minute and you have mashed potatoes!

    Here are the main ingredients you'll need to make these KitchenAid mashed potatoes:

    • Yukon gold potatoes: These are the creamiest potato and generally the best for mashing. But you could also use white potatoes, red potatoes, russet potatoes, or sweet potatoes. ½ pound of potatoes per person is a typical serving, so for this recipe to serve 4 people we have 2 pounds of potatoes (4 medium size potatoes).
    • Butter: Potatoes love fat. Use dairy-free if preferred.
    • Milk: The more fat the better. I use 2% usually, but you can use dairy-free if preferred.
    • Salt: Potatoes also love salt. A lot of it. Don't be afraid to add more and taste as you go.
    • Garlic powder & black pepper: I love to give my mashed potatoes a garlicky kick with some garlic powder. It's a more mellow flavor than raw garlic.
    • Chives, green onion, or parsley: I also loooove chives. Feel free to top your potatoes with your herb or sauce of choice. See suggestions of what to serve with mashed potatoes below.

    Substitutions

    Change up these potatoes depending on your taste! Here are some suggestions:

    • Use a different potato. Use what you have on hand. This technique will work for white, russet, or sweet potatoes.
    • Make them dairy-free. Just use your favourite vegan butter and plant-based milk.
    • Or... add more dairy. You could add cream cheese, heavy cream, or sour cream for more creaminess.
    • Add spice or flavor. Add paprika, onion powder, nutritional yeast, roasted garlic—you name it.
    • Top them. Top with herbs like parsley and chives, green onions, shredded cheese, bacon, etc.

    Equipment

    Obviously, given the title of this recipe, it is ideal if you have a KitchenAid stand mixer. Mine pictured here is the Artisan Series 5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer with the 5 Quart Glass Bowl. And I looove it! If you have any other type of stand mixer, that will work too. I recommend the flat beater attachment for this recipe. Or, the good old fashioned potato masher, potato ricer, or food mill will work just fine!

    Step-by-Step Instructions

    Be sure to read the recipe card below for the full ingredient list and instructions for how to make mashed potatoes in your KitchenAid stand mixer.

    (Prep) Peel the potatoes and chop into 1 inch cubes.

    (1) Place them in a medium size pot and fill with cold water to cover the potatoes. Bring to a boil and add a good pinch of salt. Boil until fork tender, about 10-15 minutes.

    (2) Drain the excess water from the potatoes and immediately add them and the rest of the ingredients (except the garnishes) to the bowl of a stand mixer.

    (3) Use the flat paddle attachment to mix on low speed for just 1 minute, until combined and creamy.

    Adjust the seasonings, butter, or milk quantities to taste. Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and garnish with chopped herbs. Enjoy your perfect mashed potatoes!

    Storage & Freezing

    Storage: Leftover mashed potatoes can be kept in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat with the instructions above.

    Freezing: Many readers have had success freezing mashed potatoes. Ensure there is lots of butter and milk in them to avoid ice crystallization. Freeze in an airtight container for up to 1 month. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

    Expert Tips

    Here are some of my top tips and tricks for the best KitchenAid mashed potatoes:

    • Try to chop the potatoes as evenly as possible. So they boil evenly.
    • Slightly over-boil the potatoes so that they are extra soft and easy to mix.
    • Do not over-mix the potatoes! Mix just until combined and creamy in the KitchenAid. Over-mixed potatoes may become gluey in texture.
    • Adjust to taste. Add extra spices, salt, milk, butter, or garnish to your taste.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can I make these potatoes if I don't have a KitchenAid stand mixer?

    Yes! You can use any brand of stand mixer. Or if you don't have a stand mixer, a classic potato masher and some elbow grease will do. Drain the potatoes after boiling and add them back to the pot along with the remaining ingredients. Mash and stir.

    Why are my mashed potatoes thick and gluey?

    Mixing the potatoes for too long may cause too much starch to be released, creating "tough" and gluey mashed potatoes. They'll still taste amazing, but next time ensure you mix them just until mashed.

    What is the best stand mixer attachment for mashing potatoes?

    I recommend using the paddle attachment to mash potatoes. The dough hook won't grab much and the potatoes will get stuck in the whisk attachment. The wire whisk attachment may also run the risk of over-mixing the potatoes too much.

    Can I use my instant pot, immersion blender, or slow cooker?

    While I have not tried any of these appliances to make mashed potatoes, I don't really recommend it. The instant pot and slow cooker alone will not mash your potatoes, and I worry an immersion blender will release too much starch, resulting in thick, gluey potatoes.
